Só no Brasil!!

Corinthians won the Campeão Paulista...I'm a Palmeiras fan, but it was still quite the experience to hear the city streets after they won...and for those soccer fans, Corinthians is the team that Ronaldo started playing for a couple months ago, he's older, fatter and slower but he is still amazing to watch and still one of the best despite all the criticism.

This video is from my balcony, there's not a lot to see, but just listen to everything...if I wasn't in Brazil I would think there was a war going on around me!! They love their soccer!

Randoms Around Sao Paulo

This first picture is some off the skyscrappers...imagine a city the size of LA but filled with 20+ story buildings.A busy walking street where you can buy almost anything
Lanchonetes...snacks that I eat a lot, coxhina on the right is filled with chicken, and on the left it is filled with cheese, I don't remember the name though...then the drink is Guarana, the BEST drink ever!!
The lobby of a movie theatre. They are quite nice here, and way cheap. On a Saturday night it is 9 Reais for a student, about $4...for a matinee during the week, 2 Reais, about $.80 (BTW...I saw Gran Torino, it was a really good movie...way worth seeing)Speaks for itself...this is from my apartment.

Most People Kissing Simultaneously

"On Saturday,14 February 2009, Valentine’s Day, 39,897 people gathered in the Plaza de la Constitucion in Mexico City to beat the record for the most people kissing simultaneously."-Guiness Book of World Records

Does anyone else see something weird with this??

Who was the odd one out and who was he/she kissing...?

Just something random...

Balance Beams

"Sometimes it seems seminary degrees uniquely qualify a person to make a simple message confusing or complicated--anything but clear." This made me laugh because it can be so true! Nothing against seminary degrees or anything, but things can be made complicated if you throw out too much "knowledge" in a conversation with somebody. Seriously...think about it...who were the people Jesus talked to the most...the lowest of the low, the poorest of the poor...they wouldn't understand a complex message, and, frankly, they wouldn't care. Jesus' message when he was "recruiting" his disciples was "Follow Me", you can't get much more basic than that and yet have pure truth as well!!

For me, I have never been someone who is very open about his faith. I understand that is a huge hindrance and something I need to work, and am working on. There is a fine balance between sharing your faith and living your faith. We are all called to share our faith and tell people about the beauty of Jesus Christ, as well as live in a manner worthy and reflective of Jesus...there needs to be both. I've gotten caught up in only living my faith (although I think it is a little more important than sharing your faith) and now feel far behind where I should be in sharing my faith with others. I need to...we all need to...get ourselves to a place where we are sensitive to God's calling at that moment. If we can gain the wisdom required to know when it is best to speak up or shut up.

When someone, like me, gets comfortable only living his life modeled after Christ (which is good) but doesn't share his/her faith people may never know you are a follower of Christ...maybe they'll just think of you as a "nice guy". On the flip-side, if all you do is share your faith, but are not living a life revolved around Christ, you will quickly be regarded as a "hypocrite".

None of us are perfect, and there is no "special formula" to be solved here, but what is amazing is that we are ABLE to ask the Holy Spirit for us to be sensitive to where or what we should be doing at this moment of the day...all the time.

"In our relationships with others, we need to emulate these (grace and compassion) characteristics of God." (Wendy Caress-http://wendycaress.blogspot.com/)

So lets all live they way Jesus lived and share His beautifully simple message!!

I Can't...

...Believe that it's been 5 weeks since I got here. I was thinking about it today and that means that I'm already a fourth of the way through this trip...I can't believe that, I know time flies, but that's crazy

I tried not to have too many expectations before I came, but everything seems to be going way different than I ever thought it would. It's been awesome, hard many times, but God is getting me through everything

I'm excited to make friends from all over the world, it's only been a few weeks and I've already made some friends about 10 different countries

It's been a crazy trip and I am excited for the next three quarters of the trip. I don't know what's gonna happen, but I pray that I will be doing what God wants me to

If You Thought Google Earth Was Cool...

...check out what else Google has...

Sad Day...

Yesterday was a day that made me sad...why?...Because of the NHL

First it was very depressing to look at the Western Conference playoff standings and to see my three favorite teams as the three worst teams...I had so much hope this year, especially for the Coyotes since there were in 5th place in the West going into the All-Star break...but losing 9 of the next 10 games after the break, they quickly fell to 14th place...Sad Day...

On top of that, the trade deadline was yesterday, and again the Coyotes continued to disappoint...They sent off (in my opinion) their best scorer, Olli Jokinen, their best defenseman, Derek Morris, their best fighter, Daniel Carcillo, and their best backup goalie, Mikael Tellqvist. None of them make a ton of money, except Jokinen, so there wasn't much reason to dish them off...Jokinen makes a ton of money, so I can see why they got rid of him, but Morris has been an amazing leader for the Coyotes since aquired from the Avs. If any defenseman needed to be dished it should have been Jovanoski, making about 7 million a year and not even having 30 points then with a -15 rating on top of it!

The Coyotes have been rebuilding for the last few years and it finally looked like they had a set team with them soon to be making runs a playoffs every year...I was wrong.

Oh well...you take the good with the bad in sports...I know there's a lot more that goes into it, this is just from my perspective...gripes and all

Oh...and...all the Coyotes got in return was a couple no-name players and a few draft picks

Been A While...

I just realized that it has been a few days since I posted anything, I want to keep everyone updated with how things have been going

What can I say, things are going great...did you expect anything less, haha...We started our art and culture class last Saturday. We went to the city centre to see where Sao Paulo was founded, in 1554 by the way, and some of the historic sites. The class had about 40 students in it, so we were able to make some new friends. After that my friends went to a churrascaria, which is a traditional Brazilian restaurant, the meat on the stick and all that jazz. The loved it, but since I knew it was gonna be $30 or $40, I bailed on them, haha. Sorry guys, they loved it though, so I was a little bit jealous

Speaking of jazz, we went to a Jazz club that night, it was awesome, a very chill atmosphere, the drummer was insane. A good time out, where we got to meet a few new people

I went to church Sunday at the Calvary church, good times, meet a few new people, and an American...yeah, that's always nice to meet someone from your home country. Then, back to school

Now that we're all caught up, I'll talk about some more important things. I've done a lot of praying since I've been down here, and thanks be to God for getting me throught the first month, not that everything is super difficult, but I love the way things go when I stop worrying about them and just wait upon the Lord. The first few weeks here awesome, I've got to meet a lot of cool people, and see a lot of the city, by foot, bus, and metro. But most of the days I would end up or choose to be by myself...some things are easier that way...but it gets old after a while, and I started thinking a lot about why God wants me down here, I had so many plans and ideas of what he wants me to do down here, I didn't feel I was making good friends with anybody, just the superficial type, I felt my Portuguese was not doing nearly as well as it should be, and more. God has gracefully given me peace about everything, and I've stopped worrying about it. I know it's very cliche, you hear it especially in church, but everything really does go better when you don't worry about things and rely on God

Since then, I've made some more good friends and a lot of things have started to where I will be hanging out with a lot more people, more frequently. The college-type group at the church starts this Tuesday, I've also started getting involved at the school, athletic-wise. I joined the school soccer team today, I never thought I'd say that...haha. Everyone was awesome and I'm excited for the season. Also, I'm going to try to start playing rugby with the school as well, I've never played rugby so I hope I can catch on quick, haha, we'll see. "The Five" of us have been getting closer and closer, having more in depth conversations about life, religion, annoyances, haha, and more. I'm excited to see how all of are relationship will develop and whatnot. Lastly, I can tell my Portuguese is getting better, I'm started to understand a lot more of what people are saying, and can somewhat speak back. our Portuguese class starts this week, so that's going to help me tremendously. That's my main goal for being down here, and accompanying the class with a couple hours of studying a day, I hope God will grant me the knowledge I need to be able to speak and learn Portuguese

That about wraps it all up, I'm looking forward to the time ahead, and I ask that you can pray for me to keep looking up to God for guidance with everything. Thanks

25 Random Things

Since I have some time available right now, I thought this thing would be fun to do. 25 random things from me head...I'm not very random...but I'll give it a try.

1. (We'll start with the easy stuff...haha) I always miss my family, I wish it could all live close together so it would be easier to see each other and hang out.
2. I think it would be awesome to climb Mount Everest...ha...that'll never happen.
3. I really don't like the Grammy Awards (Is that what their called? I'm talking about he show that hands out the Oscars.) I didn't know almost any of the movies that won the awards...I know the base it more off of the artistic talent than box office, but if no one know what the heck their talking about they're not gonna watch the Grammy's...so given some time they'll become obsolete. Just my thoughts.
4. Coming from Phoenix I love the sun. I also love it when it rains because we don't get it so often. But...down in Sao Paulo it rains almost everyday for about an hour a day...that get old.
5. Learning Portuguese is really hard...haha. But I'm determined to learn it, and with God helping me out I can do anything through Him who IS strengthening me.
6. The Coyotes have fallen apart. They went from 5th to 13th in two weeks...yeah...
7. I can't keep up on Lost while I'm down here cause NBC or ABC or whatever is GAY!! They don't let anyone watch it online outside the U.S.
8. A steak sounds really good right now...yummmm
9. Andersen Silva is my favorite UFC fighter...he fights again in April. He the "best pound for pound fighter in the world." He absolutely dominates the 185 division. Watch him in April, it'll be sick.
10. I went to an Ash Wednesday Mass service today...haha, it was cool. I'd never been to one.
11. Me ned to get a job when I get home, since I'll be all gradiated and evrythin...haha. But seriously, I'm already looking around, I got a lot to pray about and figure up until then.
12. I would love to get a Master's degree, I just have to figure out when I should get it, that's another thing I have to pray a lot about...
13. I'm half way done...jeez, this is hard...I'm quite distracted watching the Simpsons in Portuguese...I gotta crack down on this.
14. The coolest job's ever: 1) Be a missionary to Angola, Zimbabwe, Brazil or...Arizona 2) Work for the U.S. State Department at embassies across the world 3) A pro hockey player 4) A security guard that has satellite TV and Xbox
15. I used to want a dog...but things have changed, I guess cause I think they're too much work and can cost you a lot of money, that you could be using for other reason.
16. I would love to learn more and more about other religions, not just by reading, but by getting to know people who believe in that given religion and asking them questions about it. I think a lot of times we (Christians) get caught up in the fact that ours is the only way and the right way, and we forget that the people who believe in other stuff are an actual person. I think it's important to not just condemn another religion and everyone that believes in it, because how will you be able to talk to them about the truth that Jesus has given us. I would shut someone down right away if they told me my religion was wrong.
17. How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?
18. Has anyone ever eaten a rabbit? I haven't, I was curious if anyone has.
19. The Vancouver Winter Games are in about a year, I love the winter games. Who's down for getting tickets for some USA Hockey games?
20. I was reading up on the Burj Dubai building in Dubai, UAE. Their building a building that is supposed to be almost 2,700 feet tall!! That's got 1,000 feet on the Sears tower in Chicago!! Unbelievable!!!
21. It was also talking about the KVLY-TV mast in Fargo. That used to be the world's tallest man-made structure at over 2,000 feet. What's all that about, Steve?
22. Lucky by Jason Mraz is an awesome song. Tayler dedicated it as our song before I left...aww. I love it! haha...Check it out.
23. Ever since I went to the dentist I think my teeth have gotten all messed up. I knew there was a reason I didn't go to one for 7 years.
24. GGOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLL!!! Sao Paulo must have just scored. I can hear people yelling from my window.
25. This thing took me over an hour to finish. Talking with my roommate and watching the Simpsons were slowing me down, but dang...that's still long time. I'm glad I had time to do it, today has been a very relaxing day around my apartment.

Which one is your favorite?

I loved the elephant on for Tom Maior and their skeleton ones. Tom Maior was my favorite overall, although they weren't favored by the judeges. The judges ranked them in this order (I think...from off the top of my head):

1. Mancha Verde
2.Vila Maria
3. Rosas de Ouro
4. X-9 Paulista
5. Tom Maior
6. Nene de Vila Matilde
7. Peruche

Sambodromo!

Last night was the coolest party in the world!! It was all the samba schools that got to show off in the parade

To give you an idea of how it works...there is 14 Samba schools in the Sao Paulo Samba e Carnaval, they all get judged off their music, floats, dancers, costumes, timeliness, coordination and more. Each school has to do their performance within the time constraint, 55-65 minutes, and get all 3-4,000+ people/characters through the half Km stretch

Last night 7 schools played, the other 7 will play tonight. Each school has an original story line and song, that all revolves around their theme

I wish I could've gone both nights, but tonight has been sold out

Anyways, I'm gonna put pictures up of all the different floats

(Here's my watch when I got home...yes, that's a little A, not Pm, to the left)

CARNAVAL!!!!

Carnaval starts Friday night! It's gonna be crazy! I've heard only awesome things about it. I can't wait...I want to get tickets for the main parade, but I'm still not sure where it's at. So if you don't hear from me for a couple days, it's because I'm off doing something crazy. A lot of the main stuff doesn't start til 10 or so in the evening and then ends around 5 in the morning. we'll see how everything goes. But regardless, it's gonna be an experience of a lifetime...no doubt!

I'll for sure post about how everything went next week sometime. Hopefully with some wicked pictures.

All In A Day's Work

On the bus...

Haha!! I found an ice rink...rather small, and no boards, but still pretty cool!

On the subway...

One of the views from my street

They even have Applebee's!! Probably expensive though...
A view from my balcony. Very Nice!

No Samba's...But Still Fun

This weekend flew by...I saw Sim, Senhor...or rather Yes, Man...yesterday. The theartre was way nice and it only cost like four bucks for a student on a Saturday night!!! Not bad.

Today, I got to go check out a church, it's Calvary International Church, I'm glad I found it. I debated going, cause then that's just another place where English is spoken, and it will make it that much more difficult to me to learn, but I was just craving to hear God's word, and fellowship with other Christians. I liked the church and the people were real friendly, I made some friends that hopefully I'll be able hang out with some...they're Brazilians. The message at the church was good, the pastor talked from the book of Numbers...not one I read almost ever...but it was way cool, and he tied it together with words of Jesus.

After all that I got to walk around some more in an area I haven't been able to yet, and got to try out the subway for the first time, which is always fun. All in all a good weekend, and I'm joyful for God helping me with everything I need here.

Valentine's Day

This is a post to everybody.

To the first half of the population that has a significant other, husband or wife, take some time right now to thank God for the person he has set before you, I know I will be. Thanks God for the person he has grown you to be and is continuously growing you to be with that other person. I am thankful for everything God has put me through, the easy and the tough, the sad and the happy, to get me to where I am today. Without God, I wouldn't be with the most amazing girl ever imaginable that God has placed here for me. Praise God!

To the second half that is single, take some time right now to thank God that your not in a relationship. Thank him that he is continuously growing you and getting you to be the man/woman he wants you to be. Always know that God has a plan for everyone, a great, masterful, beautiful plan for you, specifically. I know a lot of people can get depressed on this day if they don't have a girl or guy, but that's CRAP! Our Lord is a beautiful God, and will never let us down, provided we trust in Him. Praise God!

Everyone should be happy with where God has them right now in their life.

Everyone should be full of joy with the life God has set before you, if your not...then maybe you're not trusting God or you're running the opposite way of what you know God wants for you.

Here's a shout out to my girl, Tayler. Love you!!
